TEACHING IN BUSH ALASKA: Further Information

The school environment is based on western education, guidelines and expectations like national standards, "No Child Left Behind." Parents and Elders want the children to be successful in western terms but not lose 'who they are' in the process. This can be conflicting.
Teachers in bush Alaska need to listen, know how the children best learn,not impose personal philosophies/ values, utilise local knowledge/ environment and elders to accommodate expected standards and engage with the students.
